Baltimore, the largest city in Maryland, is the second largest seaport in the Mid-Atlantic. Its home to the infamous Inner Harbor once the second leading port of entry for immigrants. Baltimore has a number of historical sites as well as being home to numerous famous residents, including Edgar Allen Poe, Frederick Douglass, Billie Holiday and Babe Ruth. Here are a few trip ideas for exploring Baltimore:
- The Maryland Zoo (The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore is home to more than 1500 wild animals, located in Baltimore’s historic Druid Hill Park.)
- The National Aquarium (The National Aquarium is a non-profit organization whose mission: to inspire conservation of the world’s aquatic treasures!)
- Fort McHenry (Fort McHenry is primarily known for the Battle of Baltimore during the War of 1812, when American troops stopped a British invasion. The battle inspired Francis Scott Key to pen what would become the national anthem, “The Star Spangled Banner” – originally entitled “Defense of Fort McHenry”. During the Civil War, the fort served as a military prison. Another interesting fact: When a new flag is designed for use by the United States, it is first flown over Fort McHenry. This spectacular embodiment of the spirit of America is open most days for a visit and is a must-see for history fans.
- Maryland Science Center (One of the oldest scientific institutions in the United States, the Maryland Science Center is a learning center for all ages and was originally a meeting place for an amateur scientific society where members would discuss papers on a variety of natural science topics.)
- Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament is a family dinner theater featuring staged medieval-style games, sword-fighting, and jousting performed by a cast of 75 actors and more than 20 horses in each location
